What are the competencies of research staff at research universities?

Posted by

In 2022, we completed the Dialog project, in which we surveyed the competencies of research staff and support staff at Polish research universities. We surveyed 10 research universities in Poland, and more than 260 research staff from them. We described the results of the research and our conclusions in our book, still available at the bookstore of the University of Silesia in Katowice:

Today we will show you some of the conclusions of the study of the competencies of science workers. You can find more in our book mentioned above.

In Figure 1, we show the average results of the study of competencies of science employees and the competency gaps that these employees had relative to the benchmark.

Figure 1. Average competency scores and competency gaps

Description:

  • Warsaw University (UWA)
  • Gdansk University of Technology (PG)
  • Stanisław Staszic University of Science and Technology in Cracow (AGH)
  • Warsaw University of Technology (UW)
  • Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (UAM)
  • Jagiellonian University (UJ)
  • Medical University of Gdansk (GUM)
  • Silesian University of Technology (PS)
  • Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (UMK)
  • University of Wroclaw (UW)

As can be seen, the smallest competency gap was at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (UAM), meaning that its employees had the most similar competencies to the benchmark adopted by experts. Conversely, the largest gap was recorded by the AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH), so its employees differed the most from the benchmark adopted by the respondents.

However, we concluded that, based on the data obtained, the relationship between the level of development of research staff competencies and the effectiveness of the achievement of goals at the level of the university as a whole could not be clearly determined. This is a conclusion that is inconsistent with the initial predictions, but a broader look at the studied issue and a realistic reference to the range of data obtained allows us to draw additional conclusions.

You can find more results and conclusions about them in our book, Competencies of Research University Employees in Poland:
