A publication with our research results on the competencies of the research and support staff of Polish research universities has just been released!

How did it get started?

As a team of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Staff Development of the University of Silesia in Katowice (ICRK), we developed the first model of key competencies supporting research excellence designed for employees of Polish universities. Based on this model, a one-of-a-kind tool has been created for those associated with the higher education sector.

The developed model became the basis for conducting a survey of competencies of research and support staff at Polish research universities. This phase of the project was conducted from November 2021 to the end of May 2022. The survey was conducted using an IT platform prepared by Asseco Data Systems S.A.

In accordance with the project’s stated objectives, 10 research universities took part in the study:

  1. Warsaw University
  2. Gdansk University of Technology
  3. Stanisław Staszic University of Science and Technology in Cracow
  4. Warsaw University of Technology
  5. Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań
  6. Jagiellonian University
  7. Medical University of Gdansk
  8. Silesian University of Technology
  9. Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
  10. University of Wroclaw

represented by 190 research staff and 95 support staff.

The data obtained as a result of the survey made it possible to conduct multidimensional analyses, the results of which we present in the following chapters of this paper. Thus, in Chapter 1 we present the general results of the study of the competencies of research staff and support staff in the context of the development of scientific excellence at universities, Chapter 2 contains the results of the study of the social competencies of research staff and support staff at research universities, Chapter 3 shows the competency gaps of research staff in the context of the effectiveness of their work, Chapter 4 presents the competencies of research staff against the background of the processes of commercialization of scientific research, and Chapter 5 is a case study of the competency gaps of a diverse research team.
