During the 5th Scientific Conference “Contemporary Challenges of Management, Economics and Finance” we presented the results of research on the influence of the manager on the team and the possibility of reducing this influence.
As a result of research on the impact of people on other members of the organization, two opposing approaches have developed to the importance of social influence in achieving the effectiveness of teams or entire organizations. On the one hand, the literature emphasizes the key role of the team manager in the achievement of high team performance, while on the other hand, there are views advocating the reduction of the leader’s influence in favor of more fully utilizing the potential of team members.
In this context, a new approach is emerging, referred to as balanced team management, which is based on treating one’s influence in the organization as a factor shaping performance, rather than as an attribute of personal importance and prestige. This phenomenon is gaining importance with the rise of virtual teams, which are replacing traditional teams based on workplace cohesion.
Accordingly, the research problem formulated in the study concerned the impact of sustainable management of a virtual team on its effectiveness. Two research questions arising from the research problem were posed:
RQ1: To what extent does the absence of a designated virtual team leader affect the emergence of balanced influence of team members on the course of the team?
RQ2: To what extent does the balanced influence of virtual team members affect the realization of team performance criteria?
The study conducted by the method of long-term non-participant observation provided answers to both research questions. The following answers were obtained. First, the lack of a designated virtual team leader has little impact on the formation of the balanced influence of team members on the course of team performance. Second, the balanced influence of virtual team members has very little impact on meeting the team’s performance criteria.
In a few months, when the article is published, we will show it on this blog.
